Hodgemoor Wood, Polish Camp

Hodgemoor Woods Entrance
Just off of the A355 between Beaconsfield and Amersham lies Hodgemoor Wood, Marta and I went there for a walk this morning and I thought I'd take the time to write about it for you.

Its a short distance from the A355 and you do have to travel down a country lane to get there, Once there its a nice place for a walk and to just enjoy nature. You're free to take your dogs and to even cycle on the bridal ways, however if you do choose to cycle please be aware there are also lots of horse rides also using the bridle ways also.

Memorial Plaque To the Polish Solders
who lived in Hodgemoor woods after the
second world war.
Hodgemoor Woods has so interesting history, when the second world war finished the Polish soldiers of the third Carpathian division were bought here from their postings in Italy. With Poland under communist rule and a satellite of the Soviet Union they it was no longer free for them to return to their homes.

So from the end of the war until 1962 many of the soldiers lived on this site with there families. Indeed there is still a very strong Polish community in the local area who had a plaque commissioned to mark the area an commemorate the place they used to call home.

Foundations Left Behind from former polish camp
Hodgemoor Woods
Not much is left of the former site now the Nissan huts and most parts of the camp completely dismantled. The only evidence are the remains of some foundations that are slowly decaying and being reclaimed by the forest.
